Good evening Pack 333 families. Pack 333 participates in family style camping where Cubs camp with the families in tents rather than with other Cubs. This allows siblings and other family members to participate in some activities and also have some downtime. Most campouts are setup to allow arrival anywhere from Friday late afternoon until Saturday late afternoon with departures by Sunday afternoon. The camping locals were selected this year based on up to a maximum of 2-hour travel and to allow for a variety of activities and interests. As most of our camping occurs in State or Federal parks or Scout Reservations, the Pack covers registration costs and general fees such as parking or entry fees. Depending on activities, there maybe some small additional fees which will be communicated ahead of each event. I will send out invites for each event to coordinate our arrival and activities.
28 -30 April: Camp Rock Enon Scout Reservation (Winchester, VA). We have reservations at the Tall Timbers campsite which has platform for tents, ground tent space, and a bunk cabin in case of weather or needs for families that need a little more shelter. There is hiking, canoeing, as well as Archery and BB Ranges on-site for Cub Scouts. I am awaiting final confirmation on the Archery and BB Ranges for Saturday and Sunday mornings. This should be a good introductory camping event for those Cubs and families new to camping. (https://www.sac-bsa.org/CampRockEnon)
09-11 June: Poplar Grove (Catoctin Mountain, Sabillasville, MD). We have reservations at the Youth Group Camping Site C001. This area was once an advanced training center (https://www.cia.gov/stories/story/spy-sites-catoctin/, https://www.nps.gov/subjects/spies/visit.htm) during World War II for Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and later a portion as Camp David. There are hiking, fishing, and Junior Ranger activities in addition to exploration of the area.
3 – 5 August: Patapsco State Park – McKeldin Area (Marriottsville, MD). We have a tentative reservation (waiting for our Group Pass to finalize). This local overnighter allows us to stargaze, night hike, and bike, skate, and group games. https://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/central/PatapscoValley/McKeldin/McKeldin-Area.aspx
22-24 Sept: Cape Henlopen State Park (Lewes, DE). We have youth area camping reservations that allow for us to access the Park and area. This site allows for hiking, biking, beach, World War II observation towers, Fort Miles Museum, as well as an ocean touch exhibit. There is also access to the Cape May (NJ) – Lewes (DE) ferry. With usually warm Septembers, it should make for comfortable camping and relaxing in the sun. https://destateparks.com/Beaches/CapeHenlopen
All camping trips will need some preparation and coordination. IF anyone is interested in leading one of the events, please let me know.
As always, any suggestions, questions, or comments are welcome.
